Six months on

Tomorrow it will be six months since our beloved basset hound Oscar passed away. It’s hard to believe so much time has passed already and yet I still think about him nearly everyday and tears well up in my eyes.

Oscar was our first basset hound and indeed my first pet. When we got him as an adorable six week old pup we had absolutely no idea what we were letting ourselves in for. I guess an early sign of his character was when he managed to sneak off with a whole packet of bacon and scoff the lot before we even knew what had happened. He was, as bassets can be, wilful and stubborn and on occasions as a young dog he really put our patience to the test. However, over time he matured into a noble, handsome hound, full of fun and playfulness with a love of a comfy sofa and an even greater love of food ! Without me even realising it, he became my best friend, my shadow who faithfully followed me everywhere, who I confided in and who gave me so much joy and happiness.

When Oscar became unwell and the vet said he had just a few weeks to live, we were naturally devastated. Naively I had thought he might still have a few years left but at the grand old age of 13 we had to let him go. It was a traumatic time, as any one who has ever owned a pet will testify. And although at the end it was difficult and emotional, I wouldn’t change a thing.  Oscar was one big basset hound adventure who gave us so much and who taught me a thing or two along the way. I miss him terribly but I can’t help but smile and laugh when I remember all his naughty escapades, his soulful eyes and his never ending quest for food.

Here are just a few pictures of our furry friend –  bacon thief,  sofa stealer and  little old wine drinker too !  Cheers Oscar – it was a blast.
