May was a month of lovely

Wasn’t May a lovely month ? We were blessed with long sunny days that have lightened the mood and lifted the spirits and a feeling of summer has settled upon the place. The season of fetes, and festivals and farmers’ markets has arrived and I, for one, couldn’t be happier.

We ventured to  Hillsborough Farmers’ Market, the first of what I imagine will be many  markets we will visit in the next few months. With the sun shining from early morning, people were out in force to wander around the stalls and purchase the best of local produce. We were no exception ! My husband made a beeline for the cheese stall, treating himself to a large portion of local, raw milk, Stilton type cheese called Young Buck. I’m not a cheese aficionado myself, but even I have to admit it is delicious and for those of you who live locally, definitely worth checking out.  I, on the other hand, can’t resist cakes or bread and I came away with a lovely bacon, mushroom and onion sourdough which we had for breakfast the next morning.

Hillsborough itself is a very picturesque village which I have blogged about before (see this post). So while hubby ventured off to the man creche (aka the pub), I took a walk to the top of the village and happily discovered some streets I hadn’t been down before. As always, the houses never fail to delight…just look at that blue door !

The main attraction for me, though, is a beautiful Georgian house in the centre of the village. No matter what time of year you visit, it always looks stunning, although perhaps in May it’s at its very best, decorated with purple trails of wisteria.

Looking a little closer, I noticed beautiful lace curtains at the windows…I had to drag myself away 🙂

Elsewhere, there were lovely displays in florist shops as May brought us beautiful blooms to take home. This display is from Twigs and Twine, a florist and gift shop in Hillsborough village…I just can’t resist a little wander round this store !

And I finally purchased a new ‘bistro’ garden set after waiting for ages to find the right one ! I’ve been enjoying cups of coffee here on weekend mornings. A great little find at TK Maxx which I am very happy with.

Boris, meanwhile, languished in the May heat and sought refuge amongst the cool grass and cow parsley on evening walks.

And in the late hazy sunshine of a May evening, even the dandelions looked pretty !

As it turns out,  last month was the warmest May in the UK since records began in 1910. And looking at the sunshine outside this morning, it looks like June has got off to a good start too. Have a lovely Sunday x
