Me, my blog and I

When people ask me what I do in my spare time, I say ‘I blog’. Sometimes, in response,  I get a blank look, sometimes I get an ‘oh ?’, their interest piqued, followed by a ‘what do your blog about? And I explain that I blog about my life and the things that inspire me. Some people seem fascinated by the whole concept, others struggle to understand why anyone would want to bother.

When I began blogging about two years ago, it was mainly because I was getting a little bit older. At the grand ‘young’ age of 46, I realised I had lots of pictures on my phone that never saw the light of day- moments captured that  were lost in my mobile phone gallery never to be looked at again.  I wanted somewhere that I could capture these moments more easily – somewhere I could turn to time and again to reflect on the things that I’ve done, the places I’ve visited, the beauty of this little place I call home, the little details that make up the fabric of my life.

And so that’s how Typewriter Girl started..my little place on the web which I invite others to share with me.

 It’s probably one of the most rewarding things I’ve done.

Not only have I met lots of lovely people online (people who love flowers, people who like to travel, people who are crazy enough to own a basset hound – you know who you are!), but I’ve discovered a creative side to myself that I wasn’t aware of before. I’ve been on a flower arranging class, learnt to make an autumn wreath, explored lots of interesting local places and more significantly, discovered photography.  It started off with just taking pictures on my phone for my blog posts and from there it’s developed into something else,  a passion perhaps. Hopefully, my photos have improved a great deal since the early days of my blog and I’ve signed up to an online photography club to try a learn a little more. I would never have imagined doing this a few years ago. Funny, how opening one door leads to another…

I’ve also come to appreciate ‘the little things’ a lot more…the seasonal changes, flowers, a beautiful garden, the landscape of home,  my dog’s adorable face. It has really taught me to slow down and observe more than I ever used to. These are the things that inspire me and I hope, in a small way, that my blog posts are a little nugget of inspirational delight for others.

I don’t have a blogging schedule, I don’t network online as much as I probably should, but what I do share, I share from the heart. It’s almost become a little ritual of mine that I can’t imagine doing without. And although it takes time to write these posts, I invariably feel better afterwards because I’ve reflected on the week and what was good in it. Like practising gratitude, if you will.

Over the past few months, I’ve made a few changes to my blog. I’ve added a logo and a new Portfolio page. Of course, I’d like to make more changes , who doesn’t, but these things take time, especially when we all have other commitments. I really do it see it as a journey and even when Instagram and Facebook  have long since gone, I hope to still be blogging when I’m 80 !

So, for anyone out there who has thought about blogging, I’d encourage you to give it a go. It is remarkably easy to get started on WordPress and who knows where it might take you !
