Me, my blog and I

When people ask me what I do in my spare time, I say ‘I blog’. Sometimes, in response,  I get a blank look, sometimes I get an ‘oh ?’, their interest piqued, followed by a ‘what do your blog about? And I explain that I blog about my life and the things that inspire me. Some people seem fascinated by the whole concept, others struggle to understand why anyone would want to bother.

When I began blogging about two years ago, it was mainly because I was getting a little bit older. At the grand ‘young’ age of 46, I realised I had lots of pictures on my phone that never saw the light of day- moments captured that  were lost in my mobile phone gallery never to be looked at again.  I wanted somewhere that I could capture these moments more easily – somewhere I could turn to time and again to reflect on the things that I’ve done, the places I’ve visited, the beauty of this little place I call home, the little details that make up the fabric of my life.

And so that’s how Typewriter Girl started..my little place on the web which I invite others to share with me.

It’s probably one of the most rewarding things I’ve done.

Not only have I met lots of lovely people online (people who love flowers, people who like to travel, people who are crazy enough to own a basset hound – you know who you are!), but I’ve discovered a creative side to myself that I wasn’t aware of before. I’ve been on a flower arranging class, learnt to make an autumn wreath, explored lots of interesting local places and more significantly, discovered photography.  It started off with just taking pictures on my phone for my blog posts and from there it’s developed into something else,  a passion perhaps. Hopefully, my photos have improved a great deal since the early days of my blog and I’ve signed up to an online photography club to try a learn a little more. I would never have imagined doing this a few years ago. Funny, how opening one door leads to another…

I’ve also come to appreciate ‘the little things’ a lot more…the seasonal changes, flowers, a beautiful garden, the landscape of home,  my dog’s adorable face. It has really taught me to slow down and observe more than I ever used to. These are the things that inspire me and I hope, in a small way, that my blog posts are a little nugget of inspirational delight for others.

I don’t have a blogging schedule, I don’t network online as much as I probably should, but what I do share, I share from the heart. It’s almost become a little ritual of mine that I can’t imagine doing without. And although it takes time to write these posts, I invariably feel better afterwards because I’ve reflected on the week and what was good in it. Like practising gratitude, if you will.

Over the past few months, I’ve made a few changes to my blog. I’ve added a logo and a new Portfolio page. Of course, I’d like to make more changes , who doesn’t, but these things take time, especially when we all have other commitments. I really do it see it as a journey and even when Instagram and Facebook  have long since gone, I hope to still be blogging when I’m 80 !

So, for anyone out there who has thought about blogging, I’d encourage you to give it a go. It is remarkably easy to get started on WordPress and who knows where it might take you !

Have a lovely Tuesday x.

For fellow bloggers out there, what has been your experience of blogging thus far ? I’d love to hear your thoughts on the subject.

  1. I always love reading your blog and seeing your lovely pictures. 🙂
I guess I use my blog as a memory store. I have always kept photo albums, journals etc. So blogging is definitely an extension of that. I must love my life..because I have always recorded it in some form. 😄. I also like sharing places I have visited and reading what other people get up to!!
Been blogging nearly 6 years now. And I don’t think I will be stopping very soon. 🙂 x

  2. I enjoy looking at your wonderful scenic photographs and feel like I am on those walks with you. It’s a strange thing but I never really intended to write a blog. Mine started as an ‘overspill’ from Facebook. I used to post a lot of photographs of places I’d visited. People would pose questions and want to know more, and this started to become very wordy. I set up my blog to give a more detailed account and would add the link next to my Facebook photos so that anybody who wanted to know more could go to the blog. I never thought for a moment that my blog posts would be read by anybody else, and was amazed when I realised that this was happening. I did then start to adapt my writing style, addressing a wider audience more than a specific group of people who I mostly knew personally. Most of my readers are still probably non-bloggers though. I only discovered ‘reader’ a few months ago, as early on I never even explored the site. Now, I really enjoy looking at other people’s blogs and have been inspired by many 🙂

    1. Thank you so much for reading my post and for taking the time to comment. It is always amazing when someone takes the time to read your blog posts, don’t you think ? You hit the Publish button and out it goes into the worldwide web and it is always a thrill when it connects with someone you’ve never met !!

  3. I love reading your blog and love your beautiful photographs. I find your posts … calming. They make me want to go out and see parts of our beautiful country that I don’t know. I use my blog as a way to record memories of days out, things I like etc. No schedule and I often think about setting time aside to blog but life gets in the way. Keep on blogging Typewriter Girl x

  4. I love blogging and everyone is really nice. I started blogging to record some fun experiences my family and I have and also I love sharing DIY. I have discovered in the year I have been blogging that there are so many similar people out there who also love flowers, animals and crafting…so I am staying. You are right though, it takes time to put posts together but in the end it is so much fun.

  5. I always enjoy reading what you’ve been up to and looking at your photos, and you definitely inspire me to slow down and appreciate the beauty of nature in all seasons. 😊 I’m very much looking forward to seeing how your blog evolves in the years to come. Similar to you, I started blogging because I wanted to share the photos and thoughts that didn’t really fit anywhere else, and I’ve found it more rewarding than I ever imagined when I first started. 6. I enjoyed your account of what photography and blogging mean yo you. {n photography you have a long-lasting interest – in my case over 70 years, so you have a lot to look forward to! And as you say blogging enabled you to share. By the way, can you tell me where you took the top photo of the lonely cottage in the bleak mountain landscape? I am sure I have been there – Donegal? Des.

    1. Hello Des. Thanks for your kind words of encouragement ! Yes that photo was taken at the car park beside Port Salon beach. I think you told in a previous blog post that you had stayed at a hotel there …

    2. Thank you – I knew I had been there before. Every part of Ireland has its own unique character as a result of the geology. I took pictures of a similar scene here at 5000 ft. on Mount Ruapehu. You only need to climb 500 ft, in Ireland to get such scenery. in Ireland. But I don;t miss your winters! Des.

  7. I loved your account of how you came into blogging and how it’s developed for you. What beautiful photos! I’ve been blogging for many years, (beginning when Social Media had yet to take off) but until recently, always pseudo – anonymously and on a different platform. So now I’ve two new and scary ‘firsts’ to get used to!

  8. A wonderful summary of the benefits of blogging! I know what you mean about there is always something else to do, it’s a balancing act of knowing what to do. I love the world blogging has opened up to me – not so much directly, but the confidence it has given me to take steps in the direction I want to head in my life to live it to the fullest.

    1. Thanks Catherine. Yes, it is most definitely a balancing act. I know what you mean about confidence..I have found it makes me focus on what’s important to me and that can only be a good thing, right ?

  9. Beautiful reflection in both words and pictures of the joys of blogging. We must have started at a similar time, and I too, love recording my experiences in the two mediums. Like you, I was surprised at how important the creative aspect has become, and I love the opportunity to ‘meet’ other bloggers and experience their worlds too. Glad to have found you, typewritergirl!

  10. Lovely photos and wonderful words about blogging! I love your new logo and it’s always a joy to see your dog’s adorable face. I’ve loved blogging and joining the blogging community and while I’m still hoping to spend more time writing, I’ve discovered so much enjoyment with photography and going outdoors every day with the camera.

    1. Thank you so much. Yes, I think you’re right. It’s the enjoyment of going outdoors with the camera. You get the best of both worlds ..fresh air and lovely views etc and then photos to look at afterwards !!

  12. I can relate. For me, I’d write mini-essays or lessons/notes and then they’d never see the light of anything but my laptop documents folder. Likewise, I made it my hobby and it’s become a rewarding pastime I can’t imagine living without. Keep blogging!

  13. Well, you have succeeded in the inspiration part. I am now a new follower. I can write, and life has been so full of material, but I am overwhelmed as to how to get my blog going. Your journey from phone pictures to photography inyrigues and inspires me. Maybe I can do this after all! Thanks for the friendly, gentle shove.
