A little garden update

March has been unseasonably wet and windy with torrential rain I would normally associate with an Irish summer ! It has been mild though, and the combination of rain and warmth have made their presence felt in the garden. I love nothing more than to make a cup of coffee first thing in the morning and then pop outside briefly to see how the garden is greening up and filling out and changing on a daily basis now. I thought I’d share a garden update along with some images so you can see how spring is beginning to emerge here.

The daffodils

New growth is appearing on the perennials, the flowering currants are in bloom, the heather is vibrant with colour and attracting the bees and the tulips are coming along nicely. The stars of the show at the moment, though, are the daffodils.

When they come into bloom, I quietly thank myself for the hours spent potting up all those bulbs back in October. For the reward is always worth the effort. My collection of daffodils and narcissi has been growing steadily and a mass of pots now surround our front porch – much to my husband’s amusement and sometimes frustration ! There is so much variety to enjoy in terms of colour and scent, and so each year, I cannot resist buying more.

Of course, it helps that daffodils are very easy to grow and incredibly reliable too. I tend to buy most of my bulbs from Farmer Gracy and then top up with additional ones from my local garden centre. I recently discovered a daffodil farm here in Northern Ireland and so I have bought some from there too which should be delivered later this year.

A garden update

Pots and pots of daffodils !

My favourites in bloom at the moment are Narcissus Bridal Crown, with gorgeous creamy white flowers and a distinctive sweet scent…

And Narcissus Minnow – shorter in length but with dainty, delicate, soft yellow flowers which have been a joy to discover.

At the last count, I think I had about 20 pots of daffodils but I have a funny feeling I’ll still be adding to the collection come autumn !

Wishing you all a lovely Sunday,
