Back in February, I had one of those moments in work. A moment that really made me stop and assess what I was doing , what I was doing it for and whether, at this stage of my life, I wanted to keep doing it. A sequence of events at work in fact gave me complete clarity that I was no longer fulfilled at work. And that my values and aspirations have changed since my ambitious younger self started out on her career. Change and creativity beckoned.
And so, I called time on my thirty year career in industry and handed in my resignation. Truth be told, I have always wanted to do other things as well as spend more time with my dad. I then worked the long notice period before finally leaving in early May.
When one door closes
They say when one door closes, another one opens. And two days after leaving my old job, I started a new job – this time at my local garden centre. I had applied for the role more out of hope than expectation. I was so happy when they told me I had got the job, given my limited horticultural knowledge. So here I am – working with plants, talking about plants, helping customers with plants, doing creative plant displays – all so very different to what I did before. It has truly been a breath of fresh air. I am learning new things everyday. I am considering doing an RHS qualification in horticulture but I may see how things go first before committing to a lot of study.
Change in the garden too
Speaking of plants, my own little garden continues to evolve and I enjoy getting creative by sowing different seed varieties. This year I have five different types of sunflower seeds on the go (from dwarf to giant varieties). I also have some new Floret Farm cosmos and sweet pea varieties that were gifts from a lovely friend and fellow basset hound owner in the USA. I also planted out some heleniums that I had bought as bare root perennials from Farmer Gracy. Everything is coming along quite nicely at the moment and I’m hoping that continues as the weather is rather precarious here come July. Hopefully I can share some photos in a future post. Up until now, though, the foxgloves, geraniums and anemones have thankfully all done well.

A new chapter
So, hopefully, this is the start of a new chapter for me. One that allows me to embrace my creativity and see where it takes me. Wishing you all a lovely week ahead,
Thanks for stopping by,
Paula
