The Walled Garden at Larchfield Estate

A wedding in The Walled Garden at Larchfield Estate – a photographer’s delight.

Larchfield Estate

Last weekend we attended the wedding of our beautiful niece and her fiance. The venue was Larchfield Estate, a stunning location just outside of Lisburn, Northern Ireland. The estate, set amongst 600 acres of countryside, dates back to the 1600s. It is also home to a walled garden which provides an idyllic, romantic backdrop for wedding photography. The following morning, while the rest of the family slept on, I got up early to visit the walled garden. For half an hour or so, I had the garden all to myself, which is apparently maintained by just one gardener.

The Walled Garden

Walking under arches of trailing honeysuckle , it was easy to see why they chose Larchfield Estate as their wedding venue. The garden is absolutely stunning, with a carpet of soft pink geraniums and swathes of catmint lining the gravel paths. The paths in turn lead you round the space, allowing you to enjoy the romantic and nostalgic planting from all perspectives. Beautifully maintained but with a touch of wildness about it, it felt a bit like stepping into a secret garden.

The garden also has a glass house, which always brings on a tad of envy I have to admit !

I loved some of the details too, like this little chair nestling in the shade, the perfect spot for a romantic photograph…

as well as the palette of colours in this shot.

The estate is typically only open for weddings and events. My understanding is you cannot visit the garden per se unless you are attending an event or staying at one of the cottages. Hopefully, though, these photographs give you a little glimpse of the garden at the height of summer (albeit a slightly wet one!). The estate does host a Christmas fair which is well worth a visit for the original craft stalls selling their wares. You can walk, too, through the garden in the midst of winter when it is still rather beautiful.

Wishing you all a lovely Sunday,
