Donegal is a part of Ireland I know less well, but I’ve long wanted to explore its rugged coastline along the Wild Atlantic Way. My 80-year-old neighbour often spoke fondly of his road trips there, and with my maiden name also having roots in this part of the world, a visit was long overdue. We set off early on Saturday morning, leaving from Belfast for a short weekend getaway in Rathmullan, a hidden gem in Donegal.
A stop in Ramelton
Our first stop was Ramelton, a picturesque town on the River Lennon. During the 18th and 19th centuries, it was an important trading port, with ships departing for destinations including New York and Jamaica. The old warehouses along the quayside remain a reminder of that history and give the town much of its character.
We spent some time wandering around, admiring the architecture and quiet streets, before continuing along the Fanad Peninsula to Rathmullan.

Discovering Rathmullan
Situated on the western shore of Lough Swilly, Rathmullan is a small seaside town with a beautiful stretch of golden sand. We were staying at Rathmullan House, a period property just a short walk from the beach.
The skies were grey and rain threatened as we made our way down to the shore, but the weather only added to the drama of the landscape. We walked along the beach, taking in the views across the lough towards the hills beyond.
After stopping for a drink at the Beachcomber Bar, we returned along the sand. By then, the clouds had begun to part and the sunshine transformed the scene, lighting up the beach and surrounding hills.
We must have walked for a couple of hours, enjoying the fresh air and the warmth of the late afternoon sun. Eventually, it was time to head back to the hotel, where a cosy evening, dinner and a drink by the fire awaited us.
We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend getaway to Rathmullan in Donegal – it was a reminder that sometimes a short escape is all you need to discover somewhere new.
