a trio of daffodils

Daffodil delight

I came home from work the other day and noticed that the first daffodil had finally flowered in my garden. I did a little dance of ‘daffodil delight’ ! Because living where we do, it takes them a little bit longer to make an appearance. And with winter digging its heels in this year, they were perhaps more reticent than usual to say hello. They were right to hesitate. As I look outside this morning, there is a gale force wind blowing and snowflakes are flurrying by the kitchen window.

In any case, daffodils for me are the first real sign of spring. Their beautiful, bright pops of yellow hopefully  heralding brighter and warmer days to come.  And as they bob in the breeze and catch the occasional rays of sunlight,  they can’t help but bring a smile to my face, even if it is snowing in April ! I’m sure I’m not the only to be cheered up by the sign of daffodils after winter.

Did you know that daffodils turn themselves downwards to protect their pollen and to shelter any obliging insects inside their flowers? I had always thought daffodils were slightly shy, now I know why 🙂

Scenes of daffodil delight

Photographs taken at the wonderful Antrim Castle Gardens. The daffodils grow in abundance here each spring, carpeting the woodland floor in a haze of spring yellow.

Hello October

  1. We have one little daffodil in our front garden planted by a previous inhabitant, but I can’t bring myself to move it because it’s always a lovely surprise when it appears. 😊 Happy Easter to you!
