The Cook’s Quarters Coleraine: a charming cottage stay

September is our wedding anniversary month, and after a year spent close to home, I booked a short stay on the beautiful North Coast of Northern Ireland. We stayed at The Cook’s Quarters, a characterful cottage at Camus House in Coleraine, just a short drive from the beaches at Castlerock and Benone.

No matter how often we visit this stretch of coastline, I’m always struck by its beauty. We spent much of our first day enjoying the sea air and spectacular views before returning to the cottage for a glass of wine outside, warmed by the chiminea.

The Cook’s Quarters at Camus House

Our accommodation was cosy and full of character, set within beautiful grounds overlooking the River Bann. The cottage is part of Camus House, built in 1685 on the site of Saint Comgall’s Monastery, and remains the family home of our host, Nicola.

I loved the old outbuildings surrounding the cottage, which made lovely photographic subjects. But it was the family pets who really stole the show. I quickly made friends with Basil the dog and, especially, Billy the cat, who completely won my heart.

It was a wonderful little escape, combining familiar coastal scenery with the pleasure of discovering somewhere new to stay.

Sometimes the loveliest breaks are close to home, and this was the perfect way to begin September.
